What an OTQ takes in 2028

    2:16:00Men
    2:37:00Women

An athlete who runs under the standard in the window qualifies for the 2028 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in St. Louis. It is the first team-selection event for the Los Angeles Games. The window opened September 1, 2025 and closes 60 days before the Trials. Times count on chip time, not gun time.

The men's standard dropped two minutes from 2024. The women's standard stayed at 2:37:00, after dropping from 2:45:00 for the 2016 and 2020 cycles. USATF set the standards to produce fields of about 200 men and 200 women. A faster "A" standard also earns travel funding. A top-10 finish at a Platinum Label marathon qualifies an athlete without a time.

At CIM 2025, 107 athletes ran under the standard, 52 men and 55 women. No other race in the country produced more.

    The benchmarks on the map

    • Under 2:16 / 2:37 Already under the 2028 standard from an earlier race. On Dec 6 they race for place and time.
    • 2:16 to 2:18 / 2:37 to 2:40 Within two minutes (men) or three (women) of the standard. 2:18 was the men's standard for 2024.
    • 2:18 to 2:19 / 2:40 to 2:45 Under the 2016 and 2020 standards. CIM's course drops 366 feet, so a strong race here could get them under 2:16 or 2:37.
    • Outside the benchmarks Entered with a personal best slower than 2:19 / 2:45.
    • Debut or no best listed First marathon, or the entry did not include a time yet.

The standards and window come from USATF's 2028 Trials announcement. The CIM 2025 count comes from the USATF Marathon Championships results. Tracklnd chose the two slower benchmarks. They are not USATF categories, and 2:40 for women was never a standard.

    Mockup notes

    What's real, what's simulated

    Real

    • Names, hometowns, personal bests, PR races, and teams come from Jeff's "CIM Championship Field (as of 9/8)" sheet. That is 140 men and 134 women, including the nine on the "Most Recent Additions" tab.
    • We geocoded each hometown from the city and state on the entry. Dots in the same city fan out in a small spiral so each athlete keeps a separate dot.
    • The 2028 standards, the window, the chip-time rule, and the CIM 2025 count of 107 come from USATF and the 2025 championship results.

    Simulated

    • Everything in Post-race mode, the page generates finish times, places, DNFs, and PR changes from each athlete's best with a fixed random seed. They exist only to review the layout.

Data gaps to close before launch

    • 20 athletes have no hometown on their entry, mostly headliners and the recent additions. They sit in the tray under the map until we fill them in.
    • 35 have no marathon best listed (8 are true debuts).
    • Five hometowns on the sheet were ambiguous. We placed four on a best guess: Dalton (GA), Elgin (IL), South Haven (MI), and Lafayette (CO) for Molly Grabill. "Erie" stays off the map. Two entries list only a state, Dillon Maggard (AZ) and Kasandra Parker (IA).
    • The page does not use the emails or ages from the sheet.

    Open questions

    • Should the women's middle benchmark stay at 2:40? It is Jeff's number, not a past standard.
    • Is this page only the elite-field hub, or the full CIM meet page with the schedule, watch link, and results feed?
    • When an entry lists both a hometown and a training base, which one do we plot?
    • Where do the Dec 6 results come from: the official CIM feed, a CSV import, or hand entry?
